Priority 3: Drive resilient local supply chains and maximise procurement opportunities
Queensland’s manufacturing industry must be proactive to build resilience and agility within local manufacturing operations.
Our manufacturing hubs will continue to work with governments to monitor supply chain vulnerabilities and work with partners to conduct early market research on supply chains, dependence on imports and capability gaps. This will help manufacturers identify risks and ramp up for major projects.
Tendering for major projects
The Queensland Government (including government-owned corporations) spends more than $35 billion each year on goods and services. This is set to continue, with major planned investments in hospitals, schools, rail and energy infrastructure.
It is important that local manufacturers are enabled to become more competitive in major project supply chains and tendering for government business. There will also be opportunity for First Nations manufacturers through supply chain opportunities with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous businesses.
The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will act as a catalyst for Queensland businesses to develop and grow, and our manufacturing hubs will help position companies to be tender-ready for potential contracts.
Rolling stock manufacturing standards and procurement
The Queensland Government collaborates with the Office of National Rail Industry Coordination, along with state and territory governments, to work with jurisdictions in developing a national approach to building capability in the rolling stock manufacturing sector.
The National Rail Procurement and Manufacturing Strategy will:
- drive a nationally coordinated approach to passenger rolling stock procurement
- reduce inconsistency in the application of rolling stock manufacturing standards and local content policies across states and territories
- increase innovation
- improve skills and capabilities in the rolling stock manufacturing sector.
The Queensland Government will continue to work with jurisdictions to assist in developing national rail manufacturing policy.
Priority 3 actions
We'll work with Australian Government agencies, industry, procurement and supply chain specialists, and the vocational education and training (VET) sector to achieve our priority actions.
| Actions | Lead Qld agencies |

|
| 3.2 Assist in building value chains to secure a reliable flow of critical minerals, attract investment and promote ESG goals and support manufacturers to address challenges associated with decarbonisation. |
|
| 3.3 Promote opportunities for locally made manufactured products for major projects, such as the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, including opportunities for First Nations manufacturers. |
|
| 3.4 Promote opportunities to maximise local procurement for Queensland's manufacturers in the transport sector, including train manufacturing and enable industry to be competitive for future opportunities. |
