Double Island
Double Island, off the coast of Palm Cove and north of Cairns, is back in the hands of the Queensland Government. It previously operated as an exclusive resort.
The tourism lease on Double Island was forfeited in June 2024. The Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development now administers the resort area as works continue to make the island safe and ready for future use.
Community consultation
In August and September 2024, local residents, business owners and First Nations representatives came together to share their valuable insights and aspirations for the future of Double Island.
Industry engagement
Following community consultation, the department conducted market research and industry engagement to gather insights from investors and tourism operators.
Themes from all feedback include:
- Sustainable tourism opportunities (e.g. resort, glamping, etc) with a focus on accessibility
- Adjusting tenure arrangements to allow for a commercial lease
- Integrating Indigenous culture as part of a tourism experience
- Ensuring safe and convenient access, including options for public access
Expressions of interest - now closed
The department invited Expressions of Interest for the Double Island lease.
The former resort site has been converted from a Land Act Reserve to state-owned freehold. This allows for negotiation of commercial lease terms and for the future redevelopment of the island.
To help secure the best outcome for the island and the regional community, CBRE Hotels was appointed as the marketing agent.
Requests for detailed proposal – open
The shortlisted proponents from the EOI process are required to submit a detailed development proposal, which will form part of the department’s broader evaluation process.
