Petroleum and gas industry in Queensland
Queensland’s petroleum and gas industry delivers energy, jobs and economic value at scale across the state.
It is one of Queensland’s most capable and enduring industries, a sector built on decades of technical expertise, large‑scale operations and consistent delivery. The industry sits at the centre of the state’s energy system and regional economies, accounting for more than 80% of total gas production on Australia’s east coast and supporting energy‑intensive industries, export markets and thousands of jobs across the state. It also produces petroleum liquids (including oil and condensate), which contribute to Queensland’s broader fuel and energy capability.
The focus now is on sustaining reliable supply, strengthening competitiveness and continuing to operate alongside existing land uses and community priorities as energy markets evolve, including the role petroleum liquids (oil and condensate) can play in supporting fuel security over time.
A strategic role for petroleum and gas
Queensland’s petroleum and gas industry is fundamental to energy security and industrial capability, supplying domestic users and international markets. The industry underpins electricity generation, manufacturing and processing across Queensland, while also supporting Australia’s position as a leading LNG exporter, with more than 24 million tonnes supplied in the 2024–25 financial year. Petroleum liquids (including oil and condensate) are also part of the picture, as potential feedstock for fuels and other products.
The strength of Queensland’s petroleum and gas industry lies in what it consistently delivers, energy at scale, confidence in supply and real economic value for Queensland. This capability remains central to the state’s energy system today and into the future.
Exploration, appraisal and development activity, including oil, continue to shape future supply options and longer‑term opportunities within Queensland’s petroleum and gas sector, including opportunities relevant to fuel security.
