Our leadership competencies framework

To determine your suitability for a role with our department, you will be assessed against the leadership competencies for Queensland.

Individual role descriptions, provided with each vacancy, detail the competencies required for the role's key duties and accountabilities.

Our recruitment and selection process

Carefully review the role description and ensure you include all the relevant information requested. Pay close attention to the key skills being sought, as well as any mandatory requirements or special conditions outlined. Providing this critical information will assist the panel in making a well-informed decision.

Submit your application online via the Queensland Government job site, Smart Jobs and Careers. To apply, use the ‘Apply Online’ function and create a 'My Smart Job' account.

Vacancies remain open until midnight on the closing date. Please note that hand-delivered applications will not be accepted. While late applications may be considered at the discretion of the panel chair, they cannot be submitted through Smart Jobs and Careers.

For assistance, contact the Queensland Shared Services (QSS) Customer Support Team on 1300 146 370 between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Shortlisting is the first stage of the selection process, where the panel will evaluate your eligibility and suitability based on the information provided in your application. This includes reviewing any mandatory requirements and key skills outlined in the role description.

Our main method for assessing suitability is through an interview, conducted either face-to-face or via TEAMS.

This is your opportunity to demonstrate why you are the best fit for the role. If you are invited to an interview, take the time to prepare by familiarising yourself with the role and the department. Additionally, let the panel know in advance if you require any special accommodations or adjustments to help you showcase your abilities.

The panel will conduct at least one referee check to gather information about your conduct and performance. If a referee provides adverse feedback that may influence the selection outcome, you will be given an opportunity to respond.

The role description will outline any required suitability checks, such as Criminal History, Discipline History, or Working with Children checks.

Additionally, you may be asked to disclose if you have been employed as a lobbyist in the past two years, if you have previously received an early retirement, retrenchment, or voluntary medical retirement payment from the Queensland public sector, and/or if you require any workplace adjustments due to a pre-existing medical condition.

Once the appointment is approved by the delegate, a verbal offer can be made. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to negotiate their start date, salary, and other terms at this stage.

Upon request, the department can also provide a formal Letter of Offer. Please note that successful applicants may be required to complete a probationary period.

Once the selection process is complete, unsuccessful applicants who were interviewed can request post-selection feedback from the panel chair.

Queensland Shared Services (QSS) will also notify all unsuccessful applicants via email once the process has concluded, and unsuccessful applicants may request feedback by contacting the panel contact.
